5 Home Improvement Projects

0

Each of us braces for the winter season in one way or another. Perhaps it's lining up or entertainment choices so we know there will be something to watch when the blizzard arrives. For the member of the family in charge of the home renovation projects, it's all about making the house comfortable as everyone tries to get cozy this winter. Where do you begin? If you're looking for ideas, these 5 home improvement projects cannot miss.

1. Shore up the insulation. Insulation is all about making the home feel comfortable. Your heating and cooling system depend on a properly insulated home to work efficiently. If not, they will have to work overtime. In such cases, no one wins. It draws more energy from the world's depleting natural resources and it costs you a great deal more money when you have to pay for that energy. A solid insulation plan is going to help you avoid these issues. Look to the attic first and the rest of the house to follow.

2. Make sure your heating system is all set. How can you go into the winter without a full scale review of your heating system? The answer is no self-respecting homeowner ever would. Have an HVAC technician review your system before the cold weather hits. If you don't, you could end up as the most unpopular person in the house when your system's breakdown coincides with a major winter storm. You need to have this system looked at long before such a catastrophe happens.

3. Make a sweep of the major appliances. The appliances in your home will make a big difference as the winter comes along. Proper food handling and preparation procedures demand that your refrigerator maintain a steady temperature. If not, you could be putting your family at risk. At the same time, there is nothing quite as disappointing as having a holiday meal come out unsuccessfully because of an inadequate stove.

4. Patch up the kitchen. The kitchen is going to get a real workout during the winter months. Just imagine how much action takes place in this room when the holiday season hits. Even if you aren't hosting the holidays this year, you are going to spend a lot of time hunkered down when the snow season begins. Makes sure you have everything in place. The cabinets should have a new face on them, plus the countertops are another potential eyesore. Flip the switch and take care of these projects quickly.

5. Get the old windows out. Old windows allow all sorts of unwanted air into your home, both through cracks in the frame and through gaps in insulation above and below. It will be a very uncomfortable winter if you let these problems persist. You don't have to take your attack to the entire home. You can hit the problem areas first and slowly work throughout the fall. The bottom line is you won't regret a single move you make.
